Just to start, you can take a look at my tutorial on portraits (see my YouTube channel: [link]). I also made a 15 minutes portrait of Liam Gallagher (not time lapsed) so you can see how I'm actually working. Then send me your drawing so I can give you a few tips. But the real "secret" is just loooots of practice :)
